The
future needs a past
Odo Marquard
A MESSAGE TO OUR AUDIENCE
The words of Odo Marquard already served as the maxim guiding our
2006/2007 season.
What developments have taken place in Wuppertal since then? Over the
last five years, structural discussions have left their mark on
every sphere, be it the theatre and opera, our symphony orchestra,
or sacred music. They have all had to fight for their very existence
and the battle is not over.
But what is really at stake? Is bread not more important than art?
Anyone with that mindset has already capitulated for, as the Bible
says, “man cannot live by bread alone”. Creativity and leisure are
essential if we want to be spiritually complete. That is why the
concerts, church services with cantatas, Lieder recitals and organ
matinees which we offer are only ostensibly a luxury. We are firmly
convinced that without music, art and culture our town and our lives
would be impoverished to a degree which we would rather not imagine.
Our 2011/2012 season again comprises music from every age, including
contemporary music. The choir founded by Helmut Kahlhöfer 65 years
ago is as full of élan as it was then – a host of people who raise
their voices in song to impart a heartfelt message to you, the
audience.
We warmly invite you to the three days of festivities in December to
celebrate our birthday.
We are deeply grateful to our audience, sponsors and partners for
their continuing support this year. If you enjoy our music, spread
the word. Come and listen to a concert in the Immanuelskirche and
bring your friends.
Come and listen to us.
